Manila update #2

Today, due to color coding, I am not able to go anywhere... instead, I decided to pamper myself with a haircut, hot oil treatment and foot spa. It felt good!

The kids also had their haircut today.

The Filipinos are really good when it comes to cutting hairs... and the service was superb. I never liked going to the salons/parlors in Canada.

Next on my list is a body massage. I'm just looking/waiting for someone to go with me. Don't feel like doing this by myself.

Manila update #1

Our flight was quite long... about 22 hours with the connections, plus our flight was delayed, twice! We arrived Manila past midnight Friday. Immigration was a smooth process, no hassles. Could it be because everybody was already tired from the long day?

Anyway, upon arriving, we had 4 hours of sleep. And by lunch time we are off to the dermatologist for my son's skin asthma that occured during the flight only! Haaaayy... And then I met my best friend at Glorietta late in the afternoon.

My first food trip was the "House of Minis" at Glorietta's food court. Yummy... I can't believe the prices anymore... I used to pay P55 for a Salisbury steak meal, now its P90. Prices have gone!

I browse through the stores at Glorietta, and I can't believe that an ordinary [branded] t-shirt costs about P800 already... and shoes are averaging P3000++. Even kid shoes are at P250++.

Here's my first day expenses:

P1533 -- Full tank gas
P 48 -- Toll [one way]
P 255 -- Lunch at McDo [for 3]
P 355 -- SIM card plus P300 load
P 251 -- Dinner at Glorietta's food court [for 3]
P 75 -- Parking
P 800 -- Consultation fee [Derma] plus medicine
P 120 -- 3 books for my kids

Today, I bought my new toy! A Motorola SLVR L71. This would have cost me CDN $205 in Canada, here, I bought it for P6400 [CDN $150]. I think its a very good deal.

I remember when I started working [in 1991], my monthly salary was just P3000. And with my first 9 months salary then, I was able to save for a trip to Hong Kong. Of course, I didn't have much expenses then since I live with my parents and am not obligated to pay any bills around the house. But now, P3000 [CDN$ 71] is nothing.

And to think that the Philippines have the 3 largest mall around the world, which just proves that Filipinos love to shop!

Our flight leaves in a few hours... after 5 long years, we are finally going home for 1 whole month! We will be in Manila by Friday night...

A [new] friend of mine ask me to bring home a laptop for her niece who is a nursing student in the Philippines... My only condition is that she let me use her computer and to ask her niece to pick it up on the last week of my stay in the Philippines. Kapal ko ba? The laptop is a 17in screen, so its not light, and I have to handcarry it. Besides I will be in and out of town on the first 3 weeks of our stay there, so it will be hard to meet her niece. Anyway, she agreed.

I will be staying with my inlaws for the meantime, and hubby said that they have DSL connection already... so with the laptop and DSL, I may still be able to blog in between my shopping and out of town trips.

So, see you around...

Sylvan Lake Provincial Park

Last Saturday we were actually planning to go to Jasper National Park for overnight, but since we couldn't get any accommodation, we decided to go back to West Edmonton Mall. On our way, we stop by the sign that we saw... Sylvan Lake Provincial Park.

It's a pity we didn't realize it would be this nice for swimming...
We didn't have our bathing suit.

Marina Bay

Sylvan Lake, "A Town For All Seasons," is a perfect destination spot any day of the year. Touted as among Canada's ten best beaches, Sylvan's pristine waters offer a seasonal playground. Enjoy summer's swimming and boating, fall's quiet and solitude and the skating, fishing and snowmobiling of winter. Return in spring to see waterfowl migrate and the lake burst into life.

After being hooked up on Prison Break, next on my list was supposed to be Grey's Anatomy. It seems that I'm the only one who haven't seen a single episode of GA. But since it has 3 full season already, downloading the series will definitely take a lot of time... so I decided to download/watch Heroes instead.

This show is full of mystery. I honestly don't know who are the bad guys from the good guys until episode 4 or 5. I didn't particularly like episode 20 where the time frame is 5 years into the future.

Overall, its not a bad series though I'd very much prefer to watch "Prison Break" and "Lost" over "Heroes."

As a total eclipse casts its shadow across the globe, a genetics professor in India is led by father's disappearance to uncover a secret theory -- there are people with super powers living among us. A young dreamer tries to convince his politician brother that he can fly. A high school cheerleader learns that she is totally indestructible. A Las Vegas stripper , struggling to make ends meet to support her young son , discovers that her mirror image has a secret. A fugitive from justice continues to baffle authorities who twice have been unable to contain him. A gifted artist , whose drug addiction is destroying his life and relationship with his girlfriend , can paint the future. A down-on-his-luck Los Angeles beat cop can hear people's thoughts, which puts him on the trail of an elusive serial killer. In Japan, a young man develops a way to stop time through sheer will power. Their ultimate destiny is nothing less than saving the world...

My Other Cook and A Reward

July 13, 2007

Patricia loves to help out in the kitchen... she started out by setting the table [as early as age 5]. Now, she can cook rice and instant noodles. She also likes to help me stir whatever I'm cooking... and after seeing Patrick make some mashed potatoes before, she thought it was time she prepared something for the family...

Mashing the bananas and mixing it with flour,
then scooping them into the baking cups

And here's her Banana Muffin

Then it was time to prepare the [baked] Mussels

The kitchen was a bit crowded with her around... but we had tons of fun!

My Reward

Many many THANKS to Evi of The Butterfly Journal for this "reward"!

I love it!

Calgary Stampede

The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth

The Grandstand at the Stampede Ground at 7:30am

What's the fuzz about the annual Calgary Stampede???

Other than rodeo shows, there's also a midway [rides and games], stage shows, parade and concerts.... And best of all, it's the free breakfast! You just need to find out when and where and show up for your free breakfast... Some companies will host free lunch too!

Stampede breakfast usually consists of Pancakes, sausages/hotdogs, fresh fruits and drinks.

For the Stampede lunch that we attended last saturday, we had beef burgers, hotdogs, fresh fruits, beans, cotton candy, orange juice and coffee.

Calgary Stampede last for 10 days... which means you can get to eat free breakfast for 10 days! If you know where to go!

Kids dressed up as cowboys/cowgirls

Calgary Stampede is also a way of promoting and preserving Western Heritage and values!

Patricia was very good at playing dart game that she won a large Teddy bear as her prize! Every dart she throws, she pops up a balloon!

Thursday Thirteen # 26: Random Things

Job Update:
I will be resigning from my job. They won't allow me to take a leave of absence for our trip to the Philippines, hence, I have no choice but to tender my resignation. Trip to the Philippines is more important to me/us right now! Even though I told them that I like the job and that I intend to come back, Management prefers that I resign and re-apply again. Oh well...

13 Random Things About My Job

  1. My morning brightens up when I see babies and toddlers sleeping in their strollers.
  2. My heart breaks when I see kids crying because we need to take their favorite stuff toys or bags or bottle of milk or their security pillow and blanket... which needs to be x-rayed before they can go through security.
  3. I get turn off by sexy/pretty ladies walking in with their mini shirt and tank top, and then I'll see the hair in their underarm. Ewww.
  4. I get to smell and touch stinky shoes [no choice here!]
  5. It breaks my heart to see love ones crying as they say goodbye to one another.
  6. I get to see a lot of smooching too... which at times is inappropriate already considering that they are in a public place.
  7. I get to interact with passengers who are high on drugs and alcohols.
  8. I get to greet passengers that smells really good... and those that even after they left my working area, I can still smell their body odors.
  9. I tell people that their pants zippers are open [don't like doing this though].
  10. I get to see some passengers who panic when the metal detector beeps on them, like its the end of the world.
  11. I also have to deal with deaf and mute passengers [which makes communicating very hard] and those with disabilities.
  12. I also have passengers who travels with their cats and dogs. One couple have a 2 year old son and 2 black cats. That's a lot of hand carry.
  13. So far, no celebrity citing yet...

Prison Break

I just finished watching season 1 and season 2 of Prison Break. I never thought I'd love this TV series. What is so interesting about breaking out of prison anyway, right? But because friends has been telling me its good and I also read it in some blogs, I decided to download it from the internet. After watching the first episode, I am hooked!

It took me 3.5 days to download all 44 episodes and has been hooked up on watching 6-8 episodes a day! I went to work looking like a zombie for 3 days in a row just because of Prison Break. Can't wait for season 3 to begin!

The Cast:

MICHAEL SCOFIELD (Wentworth Miller) is a desperate man in a desperate situation. His brother, LINCOLN BURROWS (Dominic Purcell), is on death row and scheduled to die in a few months for an assassination Michael is convinced Lincoln did not commit. With no other options and time winding down, Michael held up a bank to get himself incarcerated alongside his brother in Fox River State Penitentiary. Once he's inside, Michael - a structural engineer with the blueprints for the prison - begins to execute an elaborate plan to break out Lincoln and prove him innocent of this sensational murder.

With the help of his cellmate, SUCRE (Amaury Nolasco), Michael begins to align himself with a disparate group of prisoners, including former mob boss JOHN ABRUZZI (Peter Stormare) and CHARLES WESTMORELAND (Muse Watson), a man some believe to be the infamous skyjacker D.B. Cooper. On the outside Michael has only one ally, his defense attorney and longtime friend, VERONICA DONOVAN (Robin Tunney) - who also happens to be Lincoln's former girlfriend. Meanwhile, Lincoln's 15-year-old son, LJ (Marshall Allman), is now adrift without his uncle Michael's positive influence in his life.

Rounding out the cast are DR. SARA TANCREDI (Sarah Wayne Callies), whom Michael ends up visiting in the prison infirmary more than he should; senior correctional officer BELLICK (Wade Williams), who is determined to keep a close eye on his new prisoner, and the powerful WARDEN POPE (Stacy Keach), who forges a close, almost father-son relationship with the new convict.

PRISON BREAK combines the hope of "The Shawshank Redemption," the camaraderie of "The Longest Yard" and the tense procedure and spectacle of "The Great Escape." This intriguing new series will reveal additional pieces of the puzzle each week as Michael carries out his daring plan to mastermind the ultimate prison break - and solve the far-reaching national-scale conspiracy that landed his brother there in the first place.

West Edmonton Mall

Last saturday, after my shift, we decided to take another 3-hour long drive up north to West Edmonton Mall [WEM]. WEM is located in Edmonton, Alberta and is the largest shopping mall in North America and the fourth largest in the world.

WEM have over 800+ stores, food court and a lot of restaurants, a waterpark, an amusement park, 2 mini golf course, cinemas, ice skating rink, bowling center and arcades...

I took more than 150 pictures for the 4 hours that we were there.

Europa Boulevard was converted into a movie set
The movie "Christmas in Wonderland" was shot here

Below Europa Boulevard is Professor WEM's Adventure Golf

And this is the other Putt 'n' glow golf

Pirates of the Mall

The Santa Maria

Sunken submarine

World Waterpark

Ice Palace

Deep Sea Derby

[Live] Flamingo Bay

We left Calgary at 2pm, reached WEM at 5:30pm... Left WEM at 10pm and got home at around 1am... so I was like a zombie during my sunday shift which starts at 5am! The only thing we were able to do was take pictures and play the putt 'n' glow golf! Bitin!

We plan to go back and make it into a whole day affair [from opening to closing].
