Cold spell

Calgary is currently under a cold spell... and it is said to last for the whole week.

I had a hard time starting my car this morning at 5:30am on my way to work. It is actually my day off and I just signed up for overtime. My engine is screaming from the -30C to -50C temperature outside with a wind gust of more than 40km to 60km/hour! Brrrrrr...

Even the school bus and the public transit are having a hard time starting their buses. Delays are everywhere! This is the first time I had experience this since we came to Canada 7 years ago. [Whoa, has it been 7 years already?]

We only had about 3cm of snow yesterday, which is good, at least the roads are not slippery.

I decided to keep the kids at home today, so I have to leave work early just to come home for them before hubby goes to work. They should actually just suspend classes today! Oh well, it's a good thing it's my day off tomorrow too and I plan to keep warm inside the house.

Photo Hunters: Old-fashioned

I got married in an old-fashioned church.
San Sebastian Basilica Church, Quiapo, Manila, Philippines.

Brief History:

"The Basilica Minore de San Sebastian or, more known as San Sebastian Church, is a fine example of the revival of Gothic architecture in the Philippines. It prides itself as the only all-steel basilica in this part of the world.

The Church of San Sebastian is a declared National Historical Landmark per Presidential Decree No. 260. State funding was accorded to the church through the National Historical Institute which undertook restoration of the church in 1982. The Recollect community has likewise expended funds for the church’s maintenance and restoration. In addition, the church was listed among the 1998 World’s Most Endangered Sites by the World Monuments Watch.

On May 16, 2006, San Sebastian Church was included in the Tentative list of the World Heritage Site citing its architectural and historical heritage."

Stars spotted!

There was a gala dinner and concert held at The Fairmont Banff Springs last January 19. To name a few, famous hollywood stars Jason Priestley, Alec Baldwin, Alicia Silverstone, Daryl Hannah, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon were there!

Sad to say, I only spotted Alex Baldwin with his 2 kids at the airport. Some are lucky enough to see Jason Priestley and Alicia Silverstone up close. I was assigned at a different gate when they went through the security area. Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins went to a different lane so I didn't see them too.

And sad to say, we are not allowed to take pictures at the security area... bummer.

If only I had known earlier that they will be participating in some outdoor events at Sunshine Village [a ski resort] for the public, I would have made plans to go to Banff.

Her way of showing her love

Almost everyday when I came home, my daughter would have a small note on a piece of torn paper or post it, or she would make a card with drawings for me and her dad.

Majority of them would have "I love you" or "you are the best dad" or "you are the best mom." She just love to write little notes and draw little different things everyday. She would also make little notes to her brother!

I have tons of this at home... and I wish I have time to scan each and every one of them.

Here's two of the things she wrote yesterday and today... she's 7 years old.

Piano Time

My MIL plays the piano. On her last visit, she brought her old keyboard for my daughter. And she taught her a few songs.

I just couldn't find the time right now to send my daughter for piano lessons. So I decided to teach her some basics though it has been so long since I last played the piano. I remember taking some lessons when I was a kid but got tired of it.

On a piano sheet, I drew the keys [for the right hand only], and ask her to look at it. At the same time, I left her the "row, row, row your boat" piece before we went to bed. The next day, after I got home from work, she told me that she knew how to play the piece already. And she did!

Thanks to the internet, I manage to find some beginners pieces for her. I manage to left her more pieces, one at a time, and she manage to learn and play the pieces all by herself. And now she has a music book of her own.

The next step is to teach her how to read the keys for the left hand. And find her a suitable piano class so she can learn properly.

Here she's playing "hot cross buns".

Playing "Row, row, row your boat" with her
left finger cross over her right fingers as
instructed by the piece.

On Dancing

I used to love dancing... I used to record the dancing of Vicor dancers, OctoArts dancers and the Manuevers from TV shows back in the Philippines. From there, I would practice and learn the whole dance. I even wanted to be part of the Vicor dancers... hehehe... but I don't think I could wear their dance outfits [mini skirts and tights...].

Back in grade school, I remember dancing the Pandango sa Ilaw and the La Jota Manileña. I wish I had pictures of those days.

One of the things that I wanted to learn was the Tinikling dance. Last month, we had our Filipino Christmas party among my co-workers at the airport. One of our supervisor did a Tinikling dance, a few short steps but she's good.

I even performed some chinese dance at my papa's class reunion with the use of a chopstick and tambourine [pictured on the right].

.....oOo.....

Have you tried any one of these folk dancing?

Tinikling -

Tinikling is considered the national folkdance with a pair of dancers hopping between two bamboo poles held just above the ground and struck together in time to music. Originated from Leyte Province, this dance is in fact a mimic movement of "tikling birds" hopping over trees, grass stems or over bamboo traps set by farmers. Dancers perform this dance with remarkable grace and speed jumping between bamboo poles.

Pandanggo sa Ilaw -

The word pandanggo comes from the Spanish dance "fandango" characterized with lively steps and clapping while following a varying ¾ beat. Pandanggo requires excellent balancing skill to maintain the stability of three tinggoy, or oil lamps, placed on head and at the back of each hand. This famous dance of grace and balance originated from Lubang Island, Mindoro.

La Jota Manileña -

It is a dance named after the capital city of the Philippines, Manila, where an adaptation of Castilian Jota afloats with the clacking of bamboo castanets played by the dancers themselves. The costume and the graceful movements of the performers noticeably inspired by Spanish Culture.

Thursday Thirteen #36: Cutting Home Heating Bills

13 Ways of cutting down your home heating bills

  • Wash clothing in cold water with cold water detergent.
  • Heat only those rooms that are in use.
  • Keep your thermostat constant. Adjusting them frequently can be costly.
  • Wear warm (closely knit fabrics) clothing indoors during cold weather.
  • Don't peek into the oven. You lose 20 percent to 50 percent of the heat each time you do.
  • Turn off oven about 5 minutes before cooking time is over.
  • Cut heat loss in half by weatherstripping doors and windows.
  • Insulate your water heater. This will pay for itself quickly.
  • Insulate your attic and all outside walls.
  • Insulate floors over unheated spaces such as crawl spaces and garage.
  • Insulate your mattress and bed frame with wrapping paper or plastic sheets.
  • Keep windows closed during cold weather.
  • Avoid use of kitchen, bathroom fans in winter. They waste household heat.

Skiing time

Yesterday, we and another family went for some skiing lessons at Canada Olympic Park [C.O.P.] where the XV Olympic Winter Games in 1988 was held.

C.O.P. have this promo that is only good on a saturday night that starts at 5:45pm. The lesson is good for 1.5 hours only but we get to stay for as long as we want until the park closes. So, we stayed until 8:30pm.

Patrick is a very good skier already but this is a first for Patricia and my second time.

I believe that skiing is the sport for me and would love to develop this. The first time I went skiing [in Feb 2006] I fell down a lot... this time though I didn't fell at all and I know how to make a turn to avoid hitting people. Still, my whole body is aching right now and I had to call in sick today as I don't think I can stand for 8 hours at work.

The snow you see in the pictures are actually fake snow.

Canada Olympic Park is a popular place for people looking to go skiing or snowboarding but do not want to drive out to the mountains. The hill is divided into three sections, the downhill racing section, the casual section and the terrain park.
